Our Leadership

Doyle SagerDr. Doyle M. Sager –  Lead Pastor

(On January 22, 2021, our Lead Pastor passed away after a brief battle with lung cancer. His pastoral ministry that spanned 54 years, the last 23 years serving First Baptist Church, Jefferson City. You can learn more about Doyle’s life and ministry and view his memorial service at fbcjc.org/doylesager.)

Doyle is a native of Albany, MO, and has served as senior pastor of First Baptist City, Jefferson City, since July 1997. His life mission statement expresses a desire to live God’s grace and to build bridges of understanding and love, and his life text is Galatians 5:22-23. He loves his wife Janet, his three children and their spouses and his grandchildren. (He also really loves coffee and the Kansas City Royals.) For relaxation, Doyle follows Major League Baseball, collects old books, watches lots of movies (especially old black and whites) and reads lots of poetry and presidential biography. When guilt overwhelms him, he runs on his treadmill or works in his yard.

Because so many pastors helped Doyle when he accepted God’s call to vocational ministry at the age of 15, he counts it a privilege to pour his life into others through  mentoring/discipling. Doyle is a monthly columnist for both Baptist News Global and Word and Way. Because he believes God cares about every person and for the total person, Doyle is equally passionate about seeing people come to faith and caring for their needs. He is actively involved in Bread for the World and is a member of Missouri Faith Voices and its local affiliate, Faith Voices for Jefferson City.  One of his favorite quotes: “The Kingdom of God is creation healed.”

Doyle holds degrees from the University of Central Missouri (BS Ed) and from Midwestern Baptist Seminary (Master of Divinity, Doctor of Ministry). Doyle is past president of Churchnet (the Baptist General Convention of Missouri), a Baptist network serving churches. He is a trustee emeritus of William Jewell College, Liberty, Missouri, where he served as a trustee for nearly twenty years. He was co-founder and president of Mainstream Missouri Baptists (1999-2002), an organization committed to preserving historic Baptist principles, centered around religious liberty for all people.
